About: An African story tells of an ancient tree that whispers secrets of the universe to a girl in order for her to protect the land and people. The story describes how the Earth hums with energy as Naledi becomes intrinsically linked with nature. The painting ‘Naledi’s Promise’ was not directly inspired by this story, rather the descriptions in this story felt poignant to the atmosphere of the painting, hence inspiring the title. Preliminary sketches of nature were used as a reference for the composition, but the painting grew spontaneously by working to music. A bright wisteria and lilac is contrasted against a deep Indian yellow to increase vibrancy and depict life as glowing or vibrating. The painting embraces aspects of the literal world whilst also reflecting on a sense of inner connectivity when immersed in the creative process.  ‘Naledi’s Promise’ aims to leave the viewer with a sense of optimism, underpinning the idea that we must cherish life and its untold mysteries.
