About: ‘Oberon’s Spell’ is as an expression of a memory, sitting outside on a warm August evening with lanterns glowing in a twisted hazel tree. The general composition was established by referring to sketches of a hazel tree, but then the painting progressed into an abstract piece by working to music; the aim was to re-activate the nostalgic moment. During the creative process, the emerging sense of heat, fantasy and enchantment conjured a similar mood experienced when reading ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’, which sparked the title of the work. A deep crimson was used to glaze over an ultramarine and umber underpainting to achieve a sense of heat and transcending light, leaving white space for the dapples of glowing lights dancing around the canvas to enable them to brightly contrast against the dark, rich background. The painting hopes to transcend the viewer into a world of fantasy where elements of reality can be slightly grasped but the imaginary prevails.
